Job description

Main Purpose:

To provide technical guidance and assurance in geomechanics by defining standards, governing data quality and leading advanced numerical modelling to assess subsurface stability, deformation and failure behaviour under varying pressure temperature conditions enabling safe underground design, risk mitigation and long-term ground control strategies.

Job Accountabilities:

  • Define and govern geo-mechanical strategy, standards, SOPs and scopes of work for data generation, laboratory testing and modelling across rock and coal systems.
  • Provide senior oversight on geo-mechanical sampling programmes, laboratory testing protocols, QA/QC frameworks and data validation.
  • Lead engagement and technical governance of geo-mechanical laboratories, consultants and modelling vendors ensuring alignment with global best practices.
  • Review and approve parameter selection, gap analysis and uncertainty treatment for project-critical geo-mechanical datasets.
  • Lead advanced stress–strain, deformation, failure and coupled thermo-mechanical modelling under evolving subsurface conditions.
  • Provide technical assurance on numerical simulations (FEM / DEM / CFD-based tools) for stability analysis, subsidence prediction and underground layout optimisation.
  • Interpret modelling outcomes to define ground control philosophies, subsidence management strategies and risk mitigation measures.
  • Integrate geo-mechanical insights with geology, reservoir, drilling and project engineering to influence design, sequencing and operating envelopes.
  • Support risk reviews, regulatory submissions, and technical justifications by providing defensible geo-mechanical inputs.
  • Prepare and review high-level technical reports, modelling summaries and decision-support presentations for leadership and external stakeholders.
  • Mentor and guide geomechanics professionals, strengthening technical capability, consistency and quality of deliverables.
