About the role
As the biofuel's market grows rapidly across the globe, BP's Supply, Trading & Shipping organization has developed a technology modernization programme to support its growth strategy in bio liquids and biogas. The Biotechnology team has a long roadmap to develop transformational solutions which includes the creation of a strategic platform for certificate management. This team supports the sustainability operations team who sits in the day-to-day execution layer of sustainability compliance and tracking for our physical trading business. They ensure that every bio trade we transact is fully traceable, properly certified, regulator-compliant, and reconciled against trading positions.

Responsibilities
As a Software Engineer, you will be responsible for building, maintaining and fixing the software and services that powers our technology solutions. In this role, you will work with a team of engineers and collaborators to ensure that the software is highly available, scalable, and secure.
Build, test, and maintain software features with guidance from senior engineers and tech leads.
Collaborate with frontend, QA, product, and platform teams to deliver high-quality product changes.
Write clean, maintainable, and well-tested code that follows team standards and engineering guidelines.
Understand requirements, ask clarifying questions, and break work down into manageable implementation tasks.
Add appropriate unit and integration test coverage to support reliable delivery.
Participate in code reviews, respond constructively to feedback, and learn from established engineering patterns.
Support platform reliability, scalability, performance, and security by following agreed practices and raising risks early.
Help investigate defects, environment issues, and integration problems with support from more experienced engineers.
Identify small areas of technical debt and contribute to improvements agreed with the team.
Communicate progress clearly, raise blockers early, and take ownership of assigned work through to completion.
Continue building product, domain, technical, and delivery knowledge to become more independent over time.
Technical Skills we need from you
Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience in Computer Science, Engineering, Computer Information Systems, or equivalent practical experience.
Foundational knowledge of software engineering principles, data structures, algorithms, APIs, databases, testing, and version control.
Ability to write clean, maintainable, and well-tested code by following established team standards and engineering practices.
Basic understanding of backend services, frontend integration, cloud platforms, CI/CD, monitoring, and secure development practices.
Clear communication skills, with the ability to explain work, ask relevant questions, share progress, and raise blockers early.
Ability to collaborate optimally with engineers, QA, product owners, business analysts, platform teams, and other stakeholders.
Comfortable working through ambiguity with guidance, including clarifying requirements, identifying risks, and seeking input from the right people.
Proactive and self-motivated, with the ability to take ownership of assigned tasks and use available people, tools, and documentation to make progress.
Open to feedback and committed to continuously improving technical skills, product knowledge, and engineering judgement.
Software Skills
Working knowledge of Python for building, testing, and maintaining backend software features.
Understanding of relational databases, SQL, schema design, and PostgreSQL.
Foundational knowledge of object-oriented programming, software design principles, data structures, algorithms, and computational complexity.
Ability to write clean, readable, maintainable, and well-tested code following team standards and established engineering patterns.
Familiarity with software development lifecycle practices, including coding standards, code reviews, source control, CI/CD, automated testing, deployment, and operational support.
Ability to debug issues, investigate defects, and work with other engineers to identify practical solutions.
Basic understanding of API development, service integration, validation, error handling, and secure coding practices.
Willingness to learn and apply best practices around reliability, scalability, observability, performance, and maintainability.
Openness to feedback and commitment to improving technical skills, code quality, testing discipline, and engineering judgement.
