Job Purpose
The Banner DBA is responsible for the administration, maintenance, performance, security, and availability of the Ellucian Banner Student Information System and its supporting database environments.
The role manages the installation, configuration, upgrading, patching, monitoring, backup, recovery, performance tuning, and security of Banner and associated Oracle and SQL Server databases. It also supports integrations, access management, disaster recovery, and system availability to ensure the reliable operation of critical institutional applications.
Key Responsibilities
* Administer and maintain the Ellucian Banner Student Information System and its supporting database environments.
* Manage Banner installation, configuration, upgrades, patching, and ongoing system maintenance.
* Administer Oracle and Microsoft SQL Server databases and support other database platforms where required.
* Monitor database performance and implement improvements through indexing, query optimization, and resource allocation.
* Develop, review, and optimize SQL queries, scripts, stored procedures, and database objects.
* Manage database backup, restoration, recovery, and disaster recovery processes.
* Maintain database security, user roles, access permissions, and data encryption controls.
* Support Banner access management, Ethos Identity Services, ORDS APIs, and integration with other institutional systems.
* Manage database replication, clustering, high-availability solutions, and failover arrangements.
* Support database modelling, schema design, and data integrity requirements.
* Develop automation scripts using Python, PowerShell, or similar tools.
* Support databases hosted on cloud platforms such as AWS, Azure, or Oracle Cloud.
* Investigate and resolve Banner, database, integration, and performance-related issues.
* Maintain technical documentation, configurations, procedures, and operational records.
* Ensure compliance with institutional information security, data governance, and change-management standards.
* Collaborate with application, infrastructure, security, and business teams to support projects and system enhancements.
Minimum Qualifications
* Bachelorâs degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Information Systems, Database Administration, or a related discipline.
* Relevant Oracle, SQL Server, cloud, or Ellucian Banner certifications are preferred.
Technical Competencies
* Oracle and Microsoft SQL Server database administration.
* Familiarity with MySQL, PostgreSQL, and MongoDB.
* Advanced SQL and query optimization.
* Database backup, recovery, and disaster recovery planning.
* Database performance tuning and capacity management.
* Database security, permissions, roles, and encryption.
* Data modelling and normalized database design.
* Python and PowerShell scripting.
* Replication, clustering, and high-availability technologies.
* AWS, Azure, and Oracle Cloud database environments.
* Ellucian Banner Version 9 administration.
* ORDS APIs, Ethos Identity Services, and enterprise integrations.
Experience
* Minimum of 10 years of hands-on experience as an Oracle and SQL Server Database Administrator.
* Strong experience administering and supporting the Ellucian Banner Student Information System database.
* Experience with Banner Version 9 installation, configuration, upgrades, patching, and database management.
* Experience with ORDS APIs, access management, Ethos Identity Services, and system integrations.
* Strong experience in database performance tuning, backup and recovery, security, replication, clustering, and disaster recovery.
* Experience within higher education or another complex enterprise environment is preferred.Â
