Reports to: Affiliate Medical Director


Role Overview


The Medical Science Liaison Manager is responsible for effective and compliant implementation of the MSL program within assigned therapeutic areas, with direct supervisory responsibility for a team of field-based Medical Science Liaisons. The role encompasses managing team performance and development, overseeing the quality and effectiveness of field operations, and implementing strategic plans to optimize team impact. The MSL Manager also establishes and maintains effective partnerships with field medical and internal colleagues to leverage the team's expertise in support of strategic objectives.


Key Responsibilities


  • Supervise direct reports including administration of performance management and individual development plans. Develop and strengthen skills through frequent coaching interactions and field visits.
  • Oversee the development and implementation of required training for new and experienced MSL personnel, covering scientific content, customer engagement skills, and functional expertise.
  • Recruit and staff field-based positions as appropriate; manage and optimize personnel resources.
  • Deploy necessary tools, processes, and resources to enable successful field activities. Oversee geography management and the team's effectiveness in developing relationships with Scientific Experts.
  • Identify meaningful metrics to measure performance. Create and review activity reports/dashboards, assess Voice of the Customer findings, and identify opportunities to improve.
  • Oversee compliance with applicable laws and Lilly policies by monitoring training, conducting periodic documentation reviews, and providing feedback from field observation.
  • Create and execute strategic plans to improve team performance and leverage expertise with Scientific Experts and internal partners.
  • Organize team meetings to share best practices, recognize contributions, enhance skills, and discuss organizational developments.
  • Participate as an active member of relevant Area Brand Teams (ABTs) and partner with cross-functional teams.
  • Oversee collection and communication of scientific intelligence and clinical insights to inform internal decision-making.
  • Partner with medical leadership to align medical strategies and priorities as part of the business planning process. Monitor and manage team budget.

Job Requirements


Required:


  • Health science related degree (PharmD, MD, PhD, or equivalent)
  • 5+ years experience in pharmaceutical industry, preferably as MSL and/or office-based medical manager
  • Leadership/people management experience
  • Medical information/communication experience or relevant therapeutic area expertise
  • Strong people management and coaching skills
  • Strategic and critical thinking skills
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Excellent command of English
  • Ability to travel domestically (role involves field visits)
  • Military service completed for male candidates

Preferred:


  • Familiarity/experience with regulated environments
  • Experience in coaching and developing scientific/technical personnel
  • Experience in field-based environments
