JOB PURPOSE / OBJECTIVE


The Senior Superintendent, Welding – Structural, is responsible for directing and supervising all welding operations within onboard and workshop-based structural projects in the MRO environment, covering rigs, vessels, or other internal yard work. Accountable for ensuring safe, timely, and quality execution of welding scopes in accordance with clients’ satisfaction, contract obligations, and the International Maritime Industries Management System (IMIMS). This role requires close coordination with various departments including Structural Managers, Senior/Other Superintendents, Welding and Structural Supervisors, Project Managers, QC, Welding Engineers, Safety Officers, and production teams. The incumbent drives project performance, optimal resource allocation, and production efficiency, while promoting a proactive problem-solving culture and adherence to best industry practices, quality, and safety standards. The Senior Superintendent ensures production line efficiency and proper housekeeping onboard and, when required, prepares budgets and cost estimates for production/projects. A proactive solution-oriented mindset, aiming for right-first-time delivery, is essential for this role. A vital part of the job is to continually advance the Structural division, positioning it as a leading area within the yard with a global reputation.


KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES 


 Reinforce IMI Health, Safety, Environment, and Quality Policies across all areas of responsibility.


 Lead and manage all welding operations for MRO structural projects, both onboard vessels/rigs and within workshops, ensuring compliance with technical/contractual requirements, WPS, and regulatory standards.


 Attend daily departmental meetings to update the Structural Manager regarding project progress and highlight any critical issues such as equipment, tooling, consumables, or resource shortages impacting project deadlines.


 Receive and execute instructions from the Structural Manager relating to project priorities and critical paths, allocating the onboard and workshop workforce accordingly.


 Institute efficient work planning. Attend and hold daily meetings with managers, superintendents, and supervisors to report on project status, receive/prioritize instructions, and synchronize resources with project critical paths.


 Lead and manage all welding operations for MRO structural projects, both onboard vessels/rigs and within workshops, ensuring compliance with technical/contractual requirements, WPS, and regulatory standards.


 Identify repair requirements by consulting with stakeholders, discuss methods for job execution, attend relevant inspections and resolve any outstanding issues.


 Monitor and control overtime work to ensure compliance with management limits.


 Prepare comprehensive production plans including schedules and resource allocations.


 Lead Structural repair welding teams including tradesmen and technicians, providing technical support and guidance as required.


 Ensure all materials, consumables and equipment are procured and delivered/used as per production and contractual requirements in close collaboration with the Procurement Supply Chain Group.


 Foster effective and consistent interaction with management, supervision and other disciplines.


 Track actual man-hours versus approved budgets, taking corrective action as needed and managing project budgets (labor, materials, equipment) for optimal cost control.


 Ensure accurate booking of hours/timesheets to the correct project/job numbers for cost capture and control; monitor and minimize material wastage.


 Guarantee that all installation, maintenance and commissioning activities related to Structural systems comply with approved procedures, quality standards, regulatory requirements and manufacturers’ recommendations.


 Liaise with the engineering, machine shop and other departments regarding Structural activities as needed.


 Lead daily/weekly progress reporting, ensuring all supervision gathers precise physical progress data.


 Oversee the compilation of Inspection Test Records (ITRs), ensuring all are completed thoroughly and on schedule, promoting interfaces across all disciplines to meet target dates.


 Provide input for bid preparations, feasibility studies and scope changes in support of business requirements.


 Visit project work locations regularly, onboard, in workshops, docks, or other relevant areas, to monitor progress, provide technical advice and ensure that all safety, environmental and housekeeping controls are in place.


 Submit proposals to management for process optimization, efficiency improvements, CAPEX and manpower planning to boost productivity.


 Carry out individual performance appraisals for all subordinate staff and recommend training requirements and certification as per IMI strategy.


 Maintain high standards of order and cleanliness across all work areas, both onboard and in the workshop.


 Perform other related tasks assigned by line management.


QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE


Education


 Bachelor's degree in engineering (preferably Mechanical/Structural/Marine) or extensive relevant experience with diploma.


Professional Qualifications (Certifications & Accreditations)


 Marine or structural professional qualifications; Welding-related certifications (IACS/Class, AWS, etc.) are advantageous.


 Proven experience in a Structural section within a major shipyard.
