Overview

Applied Materials is seeking a Senior Manager, Software Engineering to lead a team building intelligent, AI-driven software platforms. This is a hands-on engineering leadership role: you will set technical direction, drive strategic engineering initiatives, and stay close enough to the code and architecture to make sound technical calls. You will own delivery of distributed, data-intensive systems while pioneering agentic GenAI frameworks and LLM-based automation across the engineering organization.

The ideal candidate pairs a strong, classical software engineering foundation with demonstrated, real-world experience building agentic systems. We want a leader who has shipped agentic workflows into production and understands their failure modes.

Key responsibilities

• Lead a team of software engineers, owning architecture, code quality, and delivery for distributed, data-intensive systems.
• Set technical direction across the full stack — Python, JavaScript/TypeScript, React front ends, .NET / .NET Core services, REST API design, and the underlying data architecture.
• Hold a high bar for engineering rigor through design reviews, code reviews, and well-reasoned architectural trade-offs.
• Architect and build agentic frameworks using GenAI — multi-agent orchestration, tool use, memory, and evaluation — and take them from prototype to production.
• Automate software development and operational workflows using LLMs, with clear judgment about where automation adds value and where it introduces risk.
• Establish the Agentic Development Lifecycle within the team: prompt and agent design, evaluation harnesses, guardrails, observability, and iterative improvement.
• Run strategic engineering initiatives end to end — from problem framing and stakeholder alignment to execution and measurable outcomes.
• Communicate complex technical concepts clearly to engineering and non-engineering stakeholders, including senior leadership.
• Partner with product, data, and platform teams to align roadmaps and unblock delivery.
• Mentor, hire, develop, and retain strong engineers; build a culture of ownership and technical excellence.

Required qualifications

• 12+ years of software engineering experience, with 3+ years leading or managing engineering teams.
• Strong, demonstrable foundations in Python and JavaScript/TypeScript, including React, plus production experience with .NET / .NET Core.
• Deep experience designing and operating Full Stack Web based software solutions, REST APIs, distributed systems, and scalable data architectures.
• Strong working knowledge of search engines (Elasticsearch) — indexing, query design, and relevance tuning.
• Strong knowledge of cloud infrastructure on AWS and/or Azure, including networking and application-layer concepts.
• Proven, hands-on experience building agentic frameworks with GenAI — not just calling an API, but designing the agent architecture, orchestration, and evaluation.
• Strong understanding of automating software systems using LLMs, including the limits and risks of doing so.
• Working command of the Agentic Development Lifecycle: prompt/agent design, eval-driven development, guardrails, and observability.
• Track record of running strategic engineering initiatives with measurable business impact.
• Excellent written and verbal communication; able to influence across technical and executive audiences.

Preferred qualifications

• Experience in semiconductor, manufacturing, or other complex industrial/enterprise domains.
• Familiarity with agent frameworks (e.g., LangGraph, AutoGen, or equivalent) and LLM evaluation tooling.
• Experience with containerization and CI/CD for ML/LLM systems.
• Background in data engineering or ML systems at scale.

What success looks like

Within the first year, you will have stood up a reliable, observable agentic platform the broader engineering organization can build on; established the team's Agentic Development Lifecycle as a repeatable practice; and delivered at least one strategic initiative with measurable impact on engineering velocity or product capability.
