Job Duties
  • Under general supervision, supports tax reporting and compliance with a core understanding of the Internal Revenue Code or applicable statutory authority and it's applicability to financial (general ledger) data.
  • May support the monthly general ledger close, analyze financial accounting data on a monthly basis, and perform an account analysis of balance sheet and income statement accounts.
  • Reviews functions of more junior staff and provides insight with regard to optimization of internal controls. Evaluates reasonableness of assumptions made in tax calculations and determining relevant facts and arriving at conclusion supported by laws.
  • Works with tax law and accounting provisions, assists with preparation of statutory filings and/or tax returns, and provides support to Tax Managers in audits and preparation of responses to various taxing authority notices.
  • Completion of an undergraduate degree in Accounting or related field required and a minimum of 2 years related experience required.

Job Summary:


The Senior Tax Advisor will manage India Direct Tax compliance, statutory audits, and litigation for an oilfield services organization providing exploration and technology solutions to clients. The role involves coordination with external advisors, and advisory support across project operations, a Global Capability Centre (GCC), and Research Centre. The position requires strong technical depth, leadership capability, and practical interpretation of tax law in a project‑driven environment.




Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Key Responsibilities:


India Direct Tax Compliance


  • Oversee end‑to‑end income‑tax compliance for Indian entities and foreign entities, including:
    • Corporate income‑tax returns
    • Advance tax computations and payments
    • TDS / TCS compliance across oilfield service contracts
    • Tax audit coordination and Statutory Form review
  • Ensure compliance with regulatory developments relevant to Oil field sector.

US Tax Reporting & Compliance


  • Prepare and review US federal and state income tax returns and related workpapers.
  • Assist in quarterly and annual tax provision calculations (ASC 740) and disclosures.
  • Support IRS and state audits through preparation of necessary documentation and responses.

Tax Accounting


  • Perform monthly and quarterly tax account reconciliations.
  • Assist in deferred tax computations, FIN48 reserves, and other tax-related adjustments in financials.
  • Work closely with the global tax accounting team to ensure integrity of tax-related financial data.

Statutory Audit & Tax Audit


  • Act as Direct Tax SPOC for statutory and tax auditors.
  • Review tax‑related schedules, reconciliations, and disclosures in financial statements.
  • Support audits related to:
    • Long‑term service and technology contracts
    • Cost allocations and internal cross‑charges
  • Coordinate resolution and closure of tax audit observations.

Litigation & Tax Controversy 


  • Lead handling of income‑tax assessments, reassessments, rectifications, and scrutiny cases.
    • Draft and review responses to income tax notices involving deductibility of costs;
    • Disallowances and TP‑related adjustments
  • Manage applications/ appeals before DRP, CIT(A) and ITAT; coordinate higher‑level matters with external counsels.
  • Maintain litigation trackers and regularly update management and APAC tax leadership on status and exposure.

Sector‑Specific Direct Tax Advisory


  • Provide advisory support on:
    • Oilfield services and technology contracts
    • Tax treatment of mobilization, demobilization, and reimbursable costs
    • WHT applicability on payment to Vendors including non-resident vendors
    • Expense allowability and documentation to be maintained to justify the claim
  • Participate in contract and bid reviews from a direct‑tax risk perspective.
  • GCC operating model and intercompany cost allocations
  • R&D / research centre expenditure and benefit eligibility
  • Alignment of India tax positions with global tax policies
  • Coordinate with APAC and global tax teams on data and reviews.

Technical Skills:


  • Strong knowledge of Indian Income‑tax Act and judicial precedents
  • Experience with oilfield services / project‑based tax issues
  • Working knowledge of transfer pricing regulations
  • Proficiency in SAP / ERP systems and advanced Excel
  • Support process automation and standardization initiatives across tax functions.
  • Utilize SAP and other tax tools (e.g., OneSource, Excel) for data extraction, analysis, and reporting
  • Experience with OneSource, Alteryx, or Power BI is a plus.


Qualifications

Education:


  • Chartered Accountant (CA)

Experience:


  • 6 to 7 years of post‑qualification experience in Direct Tax
  • Prior exposure to oil & gas, energy services, EPC, or infrastructure sectors preferred
  • Proven experience in litigation and assessment management
  • Hands-on experience in tax compliance, reporting, and accounting for US entities
