Electrical or equivalent Required experience. 12+ Years A Snapshot of Your Day The System Design Engineer is responsible for basic and detailed engineering design activities for high voltage substation and transmission projects. This position offers the ability to directly apply engineering knowledge in substation system design, protection and control schemes, AC/DC schematics, wiring diagrams, CT/VT sizing, engineering calculations, and design coordination across project execution phases. How You’ll Make an Impact Analyze customer technical specifications and project requirements to develop technically compliant substation engineering solutions. Perform basic and detailed design engineering for HV substations, including single line diagrams, protection block diagrams, control philosophies, interlocking schemes, and communication architecture. Develop and review AC/DC schematics, wiring diagrams, termination diagrams, panel layouts, marshalling concepts, LV equipment specifications, and cable schedules using EPLAN, Ebase, AutoCAD or equivalent tools. Prepare and review engineering calculations such as CT/VT sizing, burden calculations, cable sizing, battery sizing, charger sizing, and AC/DC load calculations. Develop and validate protection and control schemes for lines, transformers, busbars, feeders, reactors, capacitor banks and auxiliary systems. Prepare equipment specifications, bill of materials, technical evaluations and drawings for protection, control, metering, RTU, communication and auxiliary panels. Coordinate engineering interfaces with internal departments, project management, manufacturing, testing, commissioning teams, customers and sub-suppliers. Review vendor/sub-supplier drawings and ensure alignment with technical specifications, applicable standards and approved design philosophy. Support design reviews, technical clarifications, FAT/SAT preparation and project-related meetings, both remote and in person. What You Bring Bachelor’s degree or equivalent with background in Electrical Engineering. 12–15 years of experience with focus on substation system design, basic engineering and detailed design for protection, control and automation systems. In-depth knowledge of substation schematics, wiring diagrams, termination drawings, panel engineering, control schemes, protection schemes, interlocking logic and auxiliary system design. Strong experience in CT/VT selection and sizing, cable sizing, AC/DC load calculations, battery and charger sizing, and preparation of engineering calculation notes. Hands-on expertise with EPLAN, Ebase, AutoCAD and other engineering design tools used for substation design documentation. Knowledge of IEC, IEEE, ANSI and utility/customer engineering standards; experience with typical relay, control, SCADA/RTU, HMI and IED equipment used in substations. Experience of working with EPC contractors, utilities, OEMs, system integrators and cross-functional project teams Soft Skills Excellent communication, interpersonal and stakeholder management skills. Strong analytical thinking, reasoning and problem-solving ability for complex engineering topics. Ability to review work performed by others and guide junior/mid-level engineers. Collaborative mindset with ability to work across engineering, project, manufacturing and commissioning teams. Willingness to learn new standards, tools and engineering practices while building domain knowledge.
