Your next role:



As a Senior Electrical Energy Engineer, you will take a leading role in the delivery of electrical infrastructure projects, supporting clients through the full project lifecycle. You will act as a technical lead, project manager, and trusted advisor, helping shape solutions that integrate engineering excellence with commercial and environmental insight.




This role is significant in working with colleagues both within the energy team and other discipline areas. The successful candidate will find themselves in a position of responsibility working directly with senior team members and mentoring junior engineers. They will be contributing directly into the technical strategy and leading design activities on a varied and exciting portfolio of projects.



Contribute to live projects from the start and have responsibilities and deadlines; advise clients, other engineers, architects and urban planners on holistic solutions



Specific projects are likely to include district energy projects and masterplan development including Energy Centre design, load calculations, conventional and renewable technologies and energy policy



Work alongside experienced engineering colleagues and attend client meetings



Make an impact and manage your workload



Undertake testing, reporting and presentations to develop design concepts. Think 'outside the box' to demonstrate creativity and diversity when approaching engineering problems to arrive at workable solutions

Key responsibilities



  • Lead the design and development of medium‑voltage (MV) electrical systems, including substations, switchgear, transformers, and distribution networks with high voltage (HV) and low voltage (LV) interfacing.
  • Deliver substation design from RIBA Stages 1–3
  • Undertake feasibility studies, optioneering, and business case development for electrical infrastructure and energy systems.
  • Liaise with DNOs/IDNOs and navigating regulatory and technical requirements.
  • Develop and review private wire network designs, including load demand assessments, network architecture and network operation philosophies.
  • Provide technical leadership on power systems studies (load flow, fault level, protection coordination studies) using industry‑standard tools such as DIgSILENT Power Factory and ETAP.
  • Act as a client‑facing lead, presenting technical findings, managing expectations, and building long‑term relationships.
  • Producing accurate, professional written reports clearly communicating our work to clients and stakeholders.
  • Ensuring that all stakeholders are kept informed of design progress and any risks are consulted with project leader/project director. 
  • Supporting the Energy leadership in client and design team relationships.
  • Oversee project delivery, ensuring quality, budget, and programme compliance.
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams across energy, sustainability, buildings, and infrastructure.
  • Contributing to techno-economic modelling.
  • Mentor and support junior engineers, contributing to team development and knowledge sharing.

Your skills and experience



  • Degree in Electrical Engineering or related discipline; Chartered or working toward Chartership.
  • Ideally be in the range of 6-12 years’ experience range
  • Strong experience in medium‑voltage distribution, substation design, and electrical infrastructure planning.
  • Demonstrable experience delivering projects through RIBA Stages 1-3
  • Familiarity with DNO/IDNO processes, grid connection requirements, and relevant UK standards.
  • Experience with private wire networks, campus energy systems, distribution network electrical infrastructure.
  • Experience with power systems analysis software (eg. ETAP, DIgSILENT, SKM).
  • Strong communication skills and confidence in client‑facing roles.
  • Ability to lead projects, coordinate multidisciplinary inputs, and manage budgets and programmes.
  • Strong numerical analysis and modelling skills
  • Ability to apply a systematic approach to complex problems.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • A collaborative mindset and enthusiasm for mentoring junior colleagues.

Desirable skills



  • Knowledge of the UK energy sector
  • Experience in developing detailed feasibility studies for energy systems at different scales
  • Experience with protection studies, load 
  • Familiarity with relevant ENA, IEEE, BS EN, IEC, and network operator standards.
  • Understanding of electrical connection strategies.
  • Technical awareness of low carbon technologies
  • A clear understanding of the interface requirements of electrical systems in low carbon system design e.g., storage, renewables, low carbon heating, demand side response, electric vehicles and energy efficiency
  • Revit and/or AutoCAD conversant
  • Participation in HAZOP and/or HAZID studies
  • Commercial experience in evaluating project design costs
  • Experience in techno-economic modelling of energy systems for feasibility studies/options appraisals
  • Knowledge of electro-mechanical system interfaces and digital operating systems 
  • Experience in client or owner’s engineer roles
  • Experience of utility providers systems and applications process.
  • RIBA Stage 4+ experience
  • Excellent graphic design and presentational skills.
  • Ability to contribute to project fee proposals and bids working with senior team members on strategy
  • Be open to serving as Line Manager to junior staff members, providing pastoral support, career guidance, and day-to-day mentoring.
