Job Summary


We are seeking a Lighting Controls Technical Designer to join our Genlyte Design Team. In this role, you will develop and deliver customized lighting and controls solutions for a wide range of commercial, industrial, and infrastructure applications.


You will collaborate closely with sales, quotations, field services, and cross-functional teams to support projects from initial design through proposal and execution. This position combines technical design expertise with direct agent and end user support, playing a key role in delivering high-value, complex lighting system solutions.


Key Areas of Responsibility


Participate in customer projects through all phases from design to proposal through completion.  You will be primarily involved in design applications/solutions and assist in proposal development of high-value/high-complexity projects. 


Additional responsibilities include:


  • Participate in projects through all phases—from design and proposal development to execution and completion
  • Design and develop lighting control systems for interior, exterior and site & area style applications
  • Review electrical and architectural documentation (reflected ceiling plans, riser diagrams, panel schedules, fixture schedules, and power plans) to create tailored controls system solutions
  • Generate project-specific device layouts, schematics, and drawings using tools such as AutoCAD and Bluebeam
  • Develop bills of materials, submittal packages, and supporting technical documentation
  • Collaborate with internal teams (Sales, Product Management, Technical Support, Quotations) and external stakeholders to support proposals and project delivery
  • Provide technical expertise to support existing and new business opportunities
  • Support commissioning and installation through detailed design documentation
  • Manage multiple projects simultaneously, ensuring deadlines and quality expectations are met

Critical Experiences


  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering (Electrical,Electronics preferred), with relevant experience up to 5 years preferred.
  • Strong experience interpreting electrical drawings.
  • Proficiency in AutoCAD & Bluebeam
  • Solid understanding of lighting systems, controls, and electrical installations
  • Knowledge of communication protocols such as 0-10V, DALI, DMX, BACnet, Art-Net, or TCP/IP
  • Familiarity with Building Management Systems (BMS), Energy Management Systems (EMS), or automation systems is a plus
  • Working knowledge of applicable codes and standards (NEC, IES, ASHRAE) and emergency lighting controls
  • Strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced environment
  • Flexibility to adapt to evolving project requirements and business needs
