Job description

What you’ll do:

"The Controls Engineer’s primary responsibility will be Production Level Controls development for EATON’s Electrification products on 3ph and Power distribution portfolio. The position will be involved in many different aspects of the product life-cycle, ranging from product specification, requirements engineering, Design & Development, and validation. Successful candidates will possess the determination required to track down and solve hard to find vehicle level controls issues.

Applicant shall have experience in design, development of HV and LV Power converters. Applicant shall have exposure of performing analytical design calculations, knowledge of system requirements and validation methods including HILS and vehicle testing. Candidate should have knowledge of vehicle market and technology trends. The candidate must be self-motivated and possess good communication skills. Preferred to have cross functional team working experience (namely engineering, manufacturing, project management, marketing and supply chain)."
"Controls Architecture & Algorithm Development
• Lead the control system architecture for power converters (voltage, current, power, and thermal loops).
• Develop and validate control algorithms (PI/PID, feed-forward, state-space where applicable) for:
o DC-link regulation, inner current loops, outer voltage/power loops
o Grid-connected functions (PLL, dq control, P/Q control, droop, synchronization) when applicable
o Parallel operation / load sharing (multi-module systems, redundancy, hot swap, N+1)
• Perform small-signal modeling, loop compensation, and stability analysis (Bode, gain/phase margin).
• Define and manage control modes and transitions (startup/shutdown, fault recovery, mode switching).
Embedded Controls Implementation
• Own real-time digital control implementation on DSP/MCU/SoC platforms (e.g., TI C2000, ARM Cortex).
• Define and manage PWM strategies, dead-time effects, sampling strategy, ADC synchronization, and digital filtering.
• Implement fault detection/mitigation logic:
o Over-current/over-voltage, short circuit protection, thermal protection, derating
o Safe-state behavior and recovery strategy
System Integration & Validation
• Drive controls verification and validation through simulation + lab correlation:
o MATLAB/Simulink, PLECS/PSIM/LTspice (as applicable)
o HIL/rapid prototyping is a plus
• Execute lab tuning and debugging:
o Frequency response measurements, transient response, stability stress testing
o Noise/EMI sensitivity evaluation and mitigation collaboration with hardware/layout teams
• Support compliance/certification and grid code testing where relevant (UL/IEC/IEEE).
Technical Leadership & Cross-Functional Collaboration
• Lead technical decisions, design reviews, and risk assessments for controls.
• Mentor and guide controls/firmware engineers; set best practices for modeling, coding, and validation.
• Collaborate with hardware teams on:
o Power stage dynamics, sensing design, signal integrity, isolation, and protection circuits
• Work with manufacturing and sustaining engineering to ensure robustness in production and field.
Documentation & Process
• Create high-quality design documentation:
o Control requirements, architecture, stability reports, validation reports, release notes
• Follow structured development process (requirements → design → implementation → verification)."

• 8+ years (or equivalent) in power electronics controls development, with 2+ years in technical leadership.

Skills:

• Strong knowledge of:
• Power converter operation and dynamics (AC/DC, DC/DC, DC/AC)
• Control theory and stability analysis for switching converters
• Digital control implementation considerations (sampling, quantization, delays)
• Proficiency in:
• MATLAB/Simulink for modeling and control design
• Embedded programming in C/C++
• Solid hands-on lab experience:
• Oscilloscope, power analyzer, current probes, FRA/Bode measurement tools
