Springer Nature is seeking to appoint a full-time Associate Editor / Editor based either in Pune or in New Delhi, India. The successful candidate will be responsible for managing and developing a robust Mathematics books portfolio. They will acquire and publish content within the existing portfolio within a strategic framework determined by the candidate and their line manager. The ideal applicant will possess excellent communication skills, both oral and written, since building and maintaining strong working relationships with authors, series editors, and other partners, both external and internal, is essential to this role. The position also requires the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously, to proactively work in a team, and to have an affinity for the academic world.

This role offers the chance to work closely with authors and shape a portfolio of high-quality books with global reach and long-term impact.


The successful candidate will be responsible for managing the publication of scientific books as well as books series in the field of mathematics, from the initial proposal through to publication. The ideal candidate will possess excellent communication and organizational skills, since building and maintaining strong working relationships with authors, series editors, and other partners, both external and internal, is essential to this role. The role also requires an affinity for the academic world and the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously, to proactively work in team, to travel, and meet people.


Key Responsibilities


·        Identify potential authors and important topics by researching new and emerging trends in the market, both national and international


·        Solicit, evaluate, acquire and develop book proposals, including managing the external peer review process


·        Develop relationships with academics, researchers, authors, etc., in order to maintain a network of subject-area experts, peer reviewers, and potential authors


·        In cooperation with editorial colleagues, develop the existing book portfolio and relationships with series editors, editorial board members, authors, etc.


·        Negotiate contract terms with authors


·        Assist authors with manuscript preparation as needed


·        Prepare final manuscripts for handover to production and remain a point of contact for authors throughout the production process


·        Meet annual goals set by editorial management for contracts signed and manuscripts put into production


·        Business travel (domestic/international) as required


Experience, Skills, and Qualifications


Essential


·        Educated to degree level in mathematics or another close STEM related field


·        Have excellent English language skills, both verbal and written, and be IT systems-literate, with a sharp eye for detail


·        At least 3-4 years of experience in a publishing environment


·        Be able to work independently as well as smoothly cooperate in a team environment


·        Be able to organize and prioritize numerous tasks and work independently in a team environment


·        Be resourceful and proactive in dealing with problems and queries


·        Excellent networking skills


·        Availability to travel to universities and attend national/international conferences


Desirable


·        A graduate degree / PhD in mathematics


·        If applying as Editor: several years of experience as an associate editor or comparable positions, including proven skills in program development, involving market knowledge and strategic thinking
