Job Overview

Job Description:

The Assistant Vice President, Client Tax Operations is a high-impact individual contributor within Citi Wealth, operating at the intersection of tax regulation, client experience, and operational execution. This role serves as a key tax subject matter resource supporting Citi Wealth, bridging Enterprise Tax Operations and Wealth Client Services to ensure accurate, timely, and well-governed tax outcomes for UHNW clients. The position focuses on hands-on execution, issue resolution, and process enhancement across global tax regulatory regimes, including FATCA, CRS, CARF, IRS Chapters 3, 4, and 61, tax documentation, NRA and backup withholding, and information reporting (1099 and 1042-S). Success in this role requires strong technical tax knowledge, attention to detail, and the ability to translate regulatory requirements into effective operational processes, while proactively identifying improvements that enhance control integrity, scalability, and client experience.

Key Responsibilities:

Tax SME Support & Advisory

  • Act as a subject matter resource across core tax regimes (FATCA, CRS, CARF, IRS Chapters 3, 4, and 61), including W-8/W-9 documentation, withholding, and reporting requirements.
  • Support Wealth Client Services, Operations, and partners (Risk, Compliance, Legal) in addressing client inquiries, documentation matters, and tax-related issues.
  • Assist in interpreting regulatory requirements and translating them into clear, actionable operational guidance.

Operations Execution & Process Improvement

  • Execute and support day-to-day (“run the bank”) tax operations oversight, including monitoring documentation, withholding, and reporting outcomes performed by Enterprise Tax Operations and third-party vendors.
  • Perform detailed analysis of exceptions (e.g., undocumented accounts, expiring forms, invalid TINs) and drive timely resolution.
  • Identify process gaps, inefficiencies, and control weaknesses; develop and implement practical, scalable improvements.
  • Draft business and functional requirements to support process enhancements, system changes, and control design.
  • Support delivery readiness for key tax events (e.g., year-end reporting cycles) through disciplined execution and issue tracking.

Issue Management & Remediation

  • Perform root cause analysis on operational issues, partnering with stakeholders to implement durable corrective actions.
  • Track and manage issues through resolution, ensuring appropriate documentation, escalation, and governance.
  • Support remediation efforts related to regulatory change, audit findings, or data quality concerns.

Regulatory Change Support

  • Assist in assessing the impact of new and evolving tax regulations on Wealth operations.
  • Support gap analysis across processes, systems, and data, and contribute to implementation efforts.
  • Help translate regulatory requirements into operational procedures, system logic, and control enhancements.

Data, Controls & Governance

  • Utilize data and reporting to monitor operational performance, identify trends, and highlight emerging risks.
  • Support data quality initiatives, including validation, reconciliation, and control execution.
  • Contribute to strengthening data lineage transparency and process documentation.
  • Ensure adherence to internal policies, regulatory requirements, and control standards.

Cross-Functional Collaboration

  • Partner closely with Operations, Technology, Data, Risk, Compliance, and Client Service teams to drive aligned outcomes.
  • Contribute to working groups and initiatives focused on operational efficiency, risk reduction, and client experience improvements.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Business, or related field.
  • 4–7 years of relevant experience in tax operations, financial services, or a highly regulated environment.
  • Working knowledge of:
    • IRS Chapters 3, 4, and 61
    • FATCA, CRS (CARF familiarity a plus)
    • W-8 / W-9 documentation
    • FATCA, NRA and backup withholding
    • 1099 and 1042-S reporting
  • Demonstrated ability to perform detailed analysis, manage issues, and execute process improvements.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to clearly articulate technical concepts.
  • Exposure to wealth management or UHNW client servicing environments.
  • Experience drafting business requirements and supporting system or process enhancements.
  • Familiarity with tax reporting platforms, withholding systems, or data workflows.
  • Analytical mindset with experience leveraging data to identify trends and drive decisions.
  • Must be amendable to work on EMEA or NAM schedule
