Role Description:


The Associate Software Engineer position offers a unique opportunity to join a fun, innovative engineering team within the AI & Data Science (AI&D) organization. You’ll work on next-generation capabilities and services in Applied AI & Automation using innovative COTS products, open-source software, frameworks, tools, and cloud computing services. The role also emphasizes demonstrating these capabilities to support critical business operations and initiatives, in ensuring quality, compliance, and performance across Amgen’s Applied AI & Automation Footprint.


The Associate Software Engineer is responsible for developing and supporting backend APIs, services, and full stack applications that power internal product capabilities. This role focuses on designing, building, testing, and maintaining modern software components that integrate with enterprise platforms and product ecosystems. The engineer will work closely with architects, product managers, designers, and peer engineers to deliver high-quality solutions aligned with business and technical goals.


Roles & Responsibilities:


  • Design, develop, test, and maintain backend APIs and services that support product features and enterprise integrations.
  • Build and enhance full stack applications using modern front-end and backend frameworks.
  • Collaborate with product managers, architects, UX designers, and engineers to translate business requirements into technical solutions.
  • Develop secure, scalable, reliable, and maintainable software aligned with DevSecOps and enterprise architecture standards.
  • Implement and consume RESTful APIs, event-driven services, and integration patterns across internal and external systems.
  • Write clean, efficient, and well-documented code following engineering standards and best practices.
  • Develop and execute unit tests, integration tests, and other testing strategies to ensure software quality and resilience.
  • Support CI/CD pipelines and deployment processes across development, test, and production environments.
  • Troubleshoot technical issues, debug application defects, and provide ongoing support and maintenance for deployed services and applications.
  • Create and maintain documentation for software design, architecture, APIs, deployment, operations, and support procedures.
  • Analyze user feedback and operational data to identify pain points and opportunities for product and technical improvement.
  • Evaluate and recommend tools, frameworks, and technologies that best fit solution requirements.
  • Collaborate with data and AI teams where needed to integrate model-driven or intelligent capabilities into product workflows, without owning core ML development.

Basic Qualifications and Experience:

  • Any degree and 2 to 6 years of Computer Science, IT or related field experience

Functional Skills:


Must-Have Skills:


  • Proficiency in one or more programming languages such as Python, C#, Java, or JavaScript for backend and full stack development.
  • Experience building backend APIs and services using modern frameworks and integration patterns.
  • Understanding of full stack application development, including UI, backend logic, and database integration.
  • Knowledge of software engineering fundamentals such as data structures, testing, debugging, and version control.
  • Familiarity with cloud platforms, CI/CD, DevSecOps, and secure application development.

Good-to-Have Skills:


  • Experience with Docker, Kubernetes, microservices, and event-driven architecture.
  • Exposure to modern front-end frameworks such as React or Angular.
  • Familiarity with monitoring/logging tools and enterprise integration/security patterns.
  • Exposure to AI/ML-enabled products, GenAI integrations, or intelligent automation platforms.

Soft Skills:


  • Excellent critical-thinking and problem-solving skills
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills
  • Demonstrated awareness of how to function in a team setting
  • Demonstrated awareness of presentation skills

Shift Information: 


This position requires you to work a later shift and may be assigned a second or third shift schedule. Candidates must be willing and able to work during evening or night shifts, as required based on business requirements.
