As organizations in the MENA region continue to evolve, there is a growing recognition that effective leadership goes beyond business outcomes and extends into fostering a mentally healthy workplace. Effective leaders today are not only responsible for guiding their teams toward productivity but also for creating an environment where employees feel supported and valued in managing both their work and personal lives. This blog delves into employee perspectives on the role of leadership in promoting mental well-being, highlighting key factors that define a supportive and balanced work culture.

Bayt.com’s latest poll, Mental Health in the Workplace: Nurturing a Supportive Environment, sheds light on the essential traits of modern leaders, as viewed by employees across various sectors. These insights reflect employee attitudes toward mental health, flexibility, and work-life balance, providing organizations with a roadmap to build more inclusive and health-conscious workplaces.

Key Findings:

  • 50% of the respondents see no support at all from their workplace, while just over a quarter of the respondents (27.3%) mentioned their workplace provides training on stress management and work-life balance.
  • 58.1% of respondents believe that flexible work hours and remote work options should be implemented to support mental health.
  • The majority (62.0%) think that discussing mental health issues at work is an important workplace topic.
  • 70.2% of the responses indicate that work-life balance impacts mental health, with 50% witnessing a significant impact since good balance is essential for mental well-being.
  • Resources for balancing personal and professional life and a more supportive and understanding management team account for well over half (63.6%) of the respondents’ choices for mental health resources to be provided by their employers.

Data for the Bayt.com Mental Health in the Workplace: Nurturing a Supportive Environment poll was collected online from 2nd October – 2nd November 2024. The results are based on respondents from countries including UAE, KSA, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Bahrain, Lebanon, Jordan, Iraq, Palestine, Syria, Egypt, Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, and Sudan, among others.
