With so many entrepreneurship success stories taking the world by storm, it is no wonder that the ambitious and career-driven MENA workforce feels its intrigue. After all, the temptation to stand on your own feet and carve your own path to success is a great one. But, what are the main reasons for pursuing entrepreneurship? Is it all about fame and glory, or are there other pressing benefits to starting your own business? How many people in the region want to start a business? For those considering segueing into entrepreneurship, what are the hurdles and obstacles you must be aware of before taking the leap? 62% of respondents prefer to be self-employed.

‘Personal fulfilment’ and ‘freedom to choose work-life balance’ emerge as the top reasons for preferring to be self-employed at53% and41% respectively.

Regular income and learning new skills are reported as the top reasons for those who prefer to seek employment in a company. (Both at43%)

Real Estate/Property Development and Commerce/Trade/Retail are considered to be the most appealing industries for entrepreneurship at11% and9% respectively.

Of those who are self-employed, nearly7 in10 respondents took the first step to establish their business in the last5 years. Data for the Bayt.com ‘Entrepreneurship in the Middle East and North Africa’2017 survey was collected online from October1 to October22,2017, with4,570 respondents from the UAE, KSA, Kuwait, Qatar, Oman, Bahrain, Lebanon, Jordan, Algeria, Egypt, Morocco and Tunisia, Sudan and Pakistan.
