ALSTOM CHARLEROI – Center of Excellence for Rail Signaling Systems


The ALSTOM site in Charleroi has developed unique expertise in complete systems that operate at a global level and focuses on signaling and railway traffic control systems, with a particular emphasis on equipment that complies with the European standard (European Rail Traffic Management System/ ERTMS).


Alstom Engineering located in Charleroi, regroups all activities that aim to deploy Alstom’s Signaling solutions, for our customers. The different teams design systems, manufacture prototypes, perform tests and trials, complete approval procedures and manage integration projects. An after-sales/service activity completes the offer for these product groups. Alstom Belgium pursues an ambitious growth strategy by actively investing in R&D.


JOB DESCRIPTION – Project System Leader


As Project System Leader, your mission will be to ensure the system engineering activities of a specific technical solution, based on, and adapted from a generic Alstom designed solution, which will fit the client’s project needs in terms of Quality, Cost and Delivery. Your action will occur in a very complex and normative environment, specific to embedded systems (and sub-systems) deployment projects. It means that you will have to :


  • Manage functionally (not hierarchically) the Project System Design Team (1-5 people depending on the projects) and secure their commitment to the project, dealing with planning, budget, workload distribution, team members skills development, escalating of staffing issues,…
  • Represent System Design within the Project Engineering Team
  • Support Project Engineering Manager in front of customers or partners, for instance to provide overview of design progress, issues and risks
  • Analyze, clarify and Confirm input requirements and needs
  • Formalize and maintain the system specifications
  • Ensure traceability through-out the formal documentation of the customer and normative requirements
  • Partner with RAM, safety, cybersecurity, ILS, and V&V teams to specify system concepts, to ensure specifications completeness and acceptance
  • Call, conduct, and participate to technical reviews (design reviews, document reviews) including consultation to end-users and experts
  • Interact with other System Engineers to ensure the share of Return of Experience between onboard projects and bids

For instance, as a member of our team and in a near future, you will take part to signalling trainborne projects such as important projects concerning the embedded signaling system for an European national railway company!


To be successful in this function, you’ll certainly have to initiate and maintain regular and constructive relationships with numerous internal (Complete Engineering Project team, teams on other Alstom sites,…) and external (customers, suppliers, partners,…) stakeholders.


REQUIREMENTS


Education - Engineering Degree (BAC +5) in Electronics, Telecom, Automation, Electricity, Robotics or in another similar technical specialty is mandatory


Experience – 5 to 10 years in relevant positions (systems / sub-systems integration, embedded equipment) in a highly complex and normative environment (railway, aerospace, defense, nuclear). Specific background in engineering combined with People nonhierarchical management experience would be a valuable asset.


Language – A full proficient use of English and a good command of French are mandatory. Other languages would be assets (especially German).
