St Andrews International School Bangkok is one of 88 schools in the Nord Anglia Education (NAE) family. We offer a British educational curriculum with an international perspective that begins in Nursery and leads up to IGCSE examinations in Year 11, and culminates with the International Baccalaureate Diploma after completing Year 13. English Learning Support Assistant (EAL)

English Learning Support Assistants (ELSAs) are full or part-time members of the English as an Additional Language Department (EAL). They work alongside classroom, subject and EAL teachers to help students access the curriculum and achieve their potential. While certain identified students may be the focus, ELSAs support learning for all students in class. The role also involves working with the Learning Support department to assist children with specific needs.

It is a demanding role that involves:

• Building caring and supportive relationships with students.
• Working effectively with class and subject teachers.
• Communicating professionally with parents.
• Developing knowledge across different curriculum areas.
• Anticipating and responding to students’ learning needs.

How ELSAs support learning:

• Attending lessons punctually and participating fully at the direction of the EAL coordinator or class teacher.
• Reviewing lesson plans in advance and adapting activities to suit student needs.
• Using clear communication strategies such as picture cues, word mats, and gestures.
• Clarifying instructions and content, orally and in writing.
• Supporting reading tasks to build skills and motivation.
• Leading small group phonics sessions.
• Encouraging positive behaviour and peer interactions.
• Helping students take responsibility for their own learning.
• Liaising with teachers to review student progress.
• Planning and delivering small group interventions.
• Assisting students and staff on school trips, cultural events, productions and inter-school activities.
• Supporting school and departmental duties, including teaching resources and displays.

Ideal candidates will:

• Be proficient in English (CEFR Level C1, IELTS Band 6.5+ or equivalent).
• Have experience teaching English as an Additional/Foreign Language.
• Understand phonics and the Letters and Sounds phases.
• Ideally have experience supporting children with ADHD, mild autism, dyslexia or similar needs.

All staff are also expected to contribute positively to the school’s extra-curricular programme by offering an activity that supports or extends student learning.
