Job Description
Operational:
- To be responsible for all aspects of the day-to-day management of the Primary School and to administer and supervise systems and routines to ensure the efficient operation of this section of the school.
- To delegate duties to the Deputy Head of Primary and Assistant Head, Year Leaders, and to develop an effective partnership, providing supervision and support in the carrying out of these roles.
- To ensure that the operation of the Primary School reflects the whole school’s philosophy and to ensure that the school’s mission is implemented.
- To maintain an overview of the curriculum and keep up to date with any curriculum changes.
- To provide professional leadership for the Primary School, ensuring the highest possible quality of education for students.
- To ensure the production of a timetable which reflects the needs of the students, and which takes account of staff strengths, skills and reasonable requests in the Primary School, and which articulates with the timetables in the other sections of the school.
- To support the Principal in the running of the whole school.
- To promote a positive and professional learning culture.
- To facilitate continuity of pastoral and academic information/data of pupils.
Students:
- Management of Primary School admissions in conjunction with the Admissions office.
- Active development and fostering of positive relationships with students.
- Responsibility for Primary School morale and discipline standards.
- Overall responsibility for health and safety of Primary School students, staff and visitors to this section of the school.
- Oversight of the Primary Curriculum and to work in conjunction with Subject Coordinators and Year Leaders to ensure successful teaching and learning.
- Oversight of unpaid Primary afternoon activities and the creche for staff children.
Teaching:
- Undertaking teaching duties as required by the Principal.
- Ensuring that specialist and shared teachers with Secondary are an integral part of Primary.
- Arranging cover for absent: Primary teachers and teaching assistants.
- Reporting to parents.
Curriculum
- Oversight of the Primary School’s curriculum policies and their implementation, including updating and introducing new curriculum initiatives.
- Maintenance of curriculum continuity between the Primary School and the Secondary School in conjunction with the Head of Secondary.
- Ensuring the regular reporting to parents
Staff
- Provision of effective orientation and induction for new Primary School staff and ensuring the procedures for staff appraisal and Primary School staff performance management are carried out according to policy.
- Provision of professional and personal support and direction to Primary School staff in order to maximize the effective carrying out of their duties.
- Provision of timely advice to the Principal in matters pertaining to staff movement and deployment, and assistance in the recruitment of Primary School staff.
- Ensuring the Primary School staff are given access to appropriate professional development.
- Maintaining open communication with staff through staff notices, and briefings.
- Maintaining open communication in order to keep the Principal well informed about Primary School matters.
- Create the duty roaster for break-times, early and late duties.
- Create the roaster for updates of display boards.
- Support staff, and provide advice, in their interaction with parents.
- Ensure the quality of school reports and other written documentation sent home from the Primary school is of an appropriate standard.
- Recruitment of Learning assistants (LA) ensuring they have the opportunity to shadow existing LAs and obtain necessary support and training.
Primary School Profile:
- Contribute to regular parent newsletters regarding Primary School matters.
- Assist in raising the profile of the Primary School and the whole school within the community.
- Ensuring that parental interest and participation in the school is encouraged and that regular parent/teacher meetings occur.
- Maintaining a visible, approachable and welcoming profile for parents, and in particular, to those directly associated with the Primary School.
- Manage all Primary School publications.
- Ensure the conducting of regular Primary School assemblies and productions and promoting Primary School involvement in whole school assemblies.
