Selling on Amazon is one of the fastest growing businesses at Amazon.com, with more than 50% of all items currently sold originating from third-party sellers. The SP-API Risk Technologies team is looking for a Systems Development Engineer who will design, build, and operate infrastructure and automation systems that protect Selling Partner data and enforce compliance across Amazon's third-party developer ecosystem. You will own the full engineering lifecycle - from design through deployment and operations - building production-grade enforcement workflows, data pipelines, and automation frameworks that operate at scale across distributed AWS services.
Our team is responsible for preserving Partner trust through developer gating, compliance monitoring, risk analysis, and policy enforcement. As a Systems Development Engineer, you will build the systems that power these capabilities: designing state machine workflow orchestration for enforcement actions, engineering CDK-based infrastructure for multi-region deployments, developing automated non-compliance and risk detection pipelines using Step Functions, Lambda, DynamoDB, and other AWS-native services, and creating proactive monitoring with fail-fast alerting across mission-critical jobs. You will write code held to Amazon Code Bar standards and work across Java, Python, and Scala to deliver solutions where no prior playbook exists.
You will be a member of a world-class engineering team comprised of Software Development Engineers, Data Engineers, Business Intelligence Engineers and Systems Development Engineers, working in a fast-paced, collaborative environment. Key responsibilities include:
- Designing and building enforcement automation systems that consolidate and orchestrate actions across multiple services
- Engineering data pipelines and queryable analytics to drive risk decision-making for developer subscription and API usage fee compliance
- Building automated notification and fault detection systems for developer-facing charge workflows
- Reducing operational toil through force-multiplier tooling and infrastructure automation
Proactively identifying systemic issues and engineering solutions that prevent future support volume
This role offers the opportunity to solve complex, ambiguous problems at scale - building greenfield enforcement frameworks, developer classification systems, and data quality pipelines that directly impact the security and fairness of Amazon's Marketplace platform. If you thrive on building systems that make other teams more effective, love diverse technical challenges, and want highly visible impact on a growing business, we want to talk with you.
Additional details regarding the SP-API Risk Technologies team:
* Our mission is to preserve Partner trust by providing continuous and reliable protection for Selling Partner data through developer gating, compliance monitoring, risk analysis, and policy enforcement.
* We will improve risk prevention through informed and automated vetting processes focused on improving our ability to stop bad actors at the door.
* We will monitor to ensure utilization is compliant with policy and provide actionable insight.
* We will analyze developer data to drive prompt detection of risky behavior and enforce compliance with our 3P development community to ensure a secure and fair platform.
Key job responsibilities
You design and build automation systems that power enforcement, compliance monitoring, and risk detection across the SP-API developer ecosystem. You own the full engineering lifecycle for your deliverables - from low-level design through deployment and operations - writing production-grade code held to Amazon Code Bar standards. You build and maintain enforcement workflow automation using state machine orchestration (Step Functions), data pipelines (Lambda, DynamoDB, Glue), and CDK-based infrastructure for multi-region deployments.
You develop proactive monitoring and fail-fast alerting systems across mission-critical jobs to ensure data quality and pipeline reliability. You design developer classification systems and drive baselining campaigns that inform risk decision-making. You build queryable analytics and automated non-compliance workflows that support subscription and usage fee enforcement. You participate in on-call rotations, conduct root cause analysis, and engineer solutions that eliminate systemic issues rather than just addressing symptoms.
You collaborate closely with Software Development Engineers, contributing to design reviews and code reviews with substantive technical feedback. You create documentation including design documents, runbooks, and trade-off analyses. You actively reduce operational toil by building force-multiplier tooling that benefits the broader team. You seek out opportunities to automate manual processes and improve system reliability, scalability, and observability across team-owned services.
You work with other Amazon leaders to share ideas and improve support across the company. You take a role in the strategic direction of the team. You play a significant role in hiring, mentoring, and training employees. You demonstrate excellent judgment when making decisions.
A day in the life
You start each day reviewing enforcement pipeline health and data freshness alerts across our mission-critical jobs - ensuring data quality before downstream systems consume outputs. You join daily sync-ups with SDEs to coordinate sprint work and unblock dependencies.
Most of your time is spent building: writing production-grade Java or Python to automate enforcement workflows via Step Functions, standing up CDK infrastructure for Lambda functions and DynamoDB tables, and engineering non-compliance detection pipelines for subscription and API usage fee enforcement. You own what you build - from low-level design through deployment and operations.
You collaborate with SDEs on the team who own enforcement business logic, partner teams who consume your enforcement signals, and Risk Technologies leadership who rely on your data pipelines for risk decision-making. Your end customers are Amazon's third-party developers - the systems you build protect Selling Partner data and maintain a secure, fair marketplace.
You also reduce operational toil through automation and improved runbooks, participate in on-call rotations, and contribute to root cause analyses and Correction of Error (COE) reviews.
