About the Role
We are looking for a Senior Batch Scheduling Engineer to lead the design, configuration, and continuous improvement of our enterprise batch scheduling landscape, primarily built on Redwood RunMyJobs (RMJ). The role is the technical reference point for scheduling across SAP and non-SAP platforms, ensuring that thousands of business-critical jobs run reliably, securely, and on time.
You will own scheduling standards, drive automation of complex workflows, and explore how emerging technologies — including AI — can enhance the way we design, operate, and optimize batch processes.
Key Responsibilities
- Own the end-to-end lifecycle of batch jobs in Redwood RunMyJobs: design, configuration, deployment, monitoring, optimization, and retirement.
- Define and enforce scheduling standards, naming conventions, and governance across SAP (S/4HANA, ECC, BW, Solution Manager) and non-SAP platforms (databases, file transfers, custom applications).
- Design and maintain complex workflows and job chains: event-driven scheduling, dynamic dependencies, parameterized templates, conditional logic, and cross-system orchestration.
- Explore and prototype the use of AI and modern automation techniques to enhance scheduling — for example, intelligent failure analysis, automated remediation workflows, or AI-assisted job design and documentation.
- Act as L3 escalation point for complex scheduling incidents, perform root-cause analysis, and define preventive measures.
- Collaborate with SAP Basis, Application Owners, and Business stakeholders on landscape changes, release cycles, and business calendars (month-end, year-end, fiscal close).
- Mentor junior engineers, review configurations, and ensure knowledge transfer across the team.
- Support audit, compliance, and security requirements (SOX, segregation of duties, role-based access in RMJ).
Required Skills & Experience
- 5+ years of hands-on experience with enterprise batch scheduling tools, including with Redwood RunMyJobs (or equivalent: SAP CPS by Redwood, Control-M, Tivoli Workload Scheduler, AutoSys).
- Strong knowledge of SAP batch architecture: SM36/SM37, background work processes, RFC connections, event-driven jobs, BW process chains, Solution Manager job documentation.
- Experience scheduling non-SAP workloads: database jobs (Oracle, SQL Server, HANA), file-based triggers, secure file transfer (SFTP/MFT), custom application workflows.
- Solid automation and scripting skills: Python, Bash, PowerShell, Java, applied to building, maintaining, and optimizing scheduling workflows.
- Understanding of workflow design principles: dependencies, error handling, retries, parameterization, reusability.
- Strong troubleshooting skills, log analysis, and performance tuning of batch environments.
- Excellent communication skills in English (written and spoken); additional languages are a plus.
Nice to Have
- Redwood RunMyJobs certification or formal training.
- Curiosity for AI and modern automation: practical interest or hands-on experience using AI tools (LLMs, copilots, agents) to design workflows, generate scheduling artifacts, analyze logs, or automate routine scheduling tasks.
- Experience with SAP S/4HANA migrations and Redwood as the strategic replacement for legacy SAP schedulers.
- Exposure to cloud-based scheduling scenarios (Azure, AWS, GCP) and hybrid landscapes.
- Experience leading or mentoring small technical teams.
