The Role

The Lead Technical Engineer is the technical authority for the British Council's globally deployed Salesforce CRM and Marketing Automation platforms, leading the design, development, and integration of scalable solutions across Service Cloud and Sales Cloud. The role owns the full development lifecycle using Apex, Lightning Web Components (LWC), and integrations, while driving technical architecture, code quality, platform performance, security, and adherence to Salesforce best practices.

Working closely with the Senior CRM Administrator, Business Analysts, Project Managers, the Head of Marketing, and the Data & Insight team, the role delivers robust CRM solutions that support more than 2,000 users across Customer Service, Cultural Engagement, IELTS, English Teaching, and Legal & Contract Management. As the highest technical authority within the CRM team, the Lead Technical Engineer also mentor’s junior developers and administrators, strengthens platform capability, and contributes to the long-term CRM roadmap supporting millions of customer interactions globally

Main responsibilities

Own the full programmatic development lifecycle for the British Council’s globally deployed Salesforce platform from technical design through to production ensuring every deliverable meets governance, security, accessibility, and GDPR data retention standards. Set and enforce the development bar for the CRM team, maintaining a reusable component library and batch processing frameworks that keep the platform stable and performant at enterprise scale.

Serve as the final technical authority on integration architecture, platform decisions, and release governance ensuring third-party connections (including HubSpot) are robust, monitored, and resilient. Lead root cause analysis of production incidents, produce architecture decision records, and drive continuous improvement across the CRM platform. Actively grow the capability of the wider team by mentoring junior developers and administrators, translating complex technical concepts for non-technical stakeholders, and contributing to the long-term CRM roadmap.

Role specific skills

  • Apex & programmatic development designs and builds maintainable, governor-limit-safe Apex (triggers, batch, queueable and scheduled jobs) following bulkification best practice and SOLID design principles.
  • Lightning Web Components builds accessible, reusable LWC interfaces using modern JavaScript (ES6+), the wire service and SLDS, tested to a high standard with Jest.
  • Integration, architecture and testing designs resilient REST/SOAP and event-driven integrations (Platform Events, Change Data Capture) with robust error handling, retry logic and monitoring. Also serve as the lead testing authority to ensure deployments are done with confidence with zero defects.
  • DevOps & release management operates Git-based CI/CD pipelines across multi-org environments, applying disciplined source control and release governance.
  • Security & code governance codes to CRUD/FLS, sharing model and injection-prevention standards as a default discipline, not an afterthought.
  • Technical leadership & communication  produces clear Technical Design Documents, mentors junior developers, and presents architectural trade-offs to non-technical stakeholders with confidence.

Role specific knowledge and experience

Minimum/essential

  • Minimum 6-7 years of hands-on Salesforce programmatic development with a strong portfolio of Apex triggers, classes, batch jobs and LWC deliverables in production environments.
  • Demonstrable portfolio of Apex solutions in high-volume production orgs (500k+ records per object): trigger frameworks that pass bulkification and governor limit audits, batch and queueable jobs managing GDPR data retention at scale, and incident records showing root cause analysis of async failures.
  • Delivered LWC components in production across internal and Experience Cloud-facing pages: evidence of JavaScript/ES6+, wire service and Apex controller patterns, WCAG 2.1 AA compliance, and Jest unit test coverage.
  • Proven track record designing and delivering production-grade Salesforce integrations: REST and SOAP APIs, Platform Events, Change Data Capture, and event-driven architectures with robust error handling, retry logic, and alerting frameworks.
  • Hands-on ownership of a CI/CD pipeline across multiple Salesforce environments (Developer → SIT → Staging → Production): Git source control, Salesforce CLI/SFDX, and CI/CD tooling (Flosum, Copado, Gearset or equivalent) with evidence of release governance and rollback management.
  • Track record of conducting and passing formal code reviews that enforce CRUD/FLS enforcement, SOQL injection prevention, sharing model adherence, and sandbox data-masking; no PII in non-production orgs.
  • Ability to design custom integration patterns between marketing automation and Salesforce using Apex callouts or middleware where native connector capability is insufficient.
  • Proven ability to produce Technical Design Documents, integration specifications and developer documentation; experience delivering within Agile/Scrum frameworks.

  • Salesforce Integration Architecture Designer.
  • Experience with Agentic AI, OmniStudio for Service Cloud agent workflows.
  • Experience with HubSpot.
