HSBC’s business capabilities in trade and receivables financing, liquidity and cash management, capital financing and investment banking, payments, and credit and lending for corporate and institutional clients covering over 50 key global locations.

What your days will look like:
You’ll work in a small team - Usually 4–6 engineers (backend, frontend, QA, DevOps). Mostly co-located in the same squad, sometimes collaborating remotely across regions and time zones.
You’ll do hands-on coding - Building and maintaining Java microservices and backend APIs (REST/gRPC/GraphQL), writing clean code with strong unit/integration test coverage and using AI coding assistants to speed up delivery without compromising quality.
You’ll liaise with the business - Partnering with Product Owners and stakeholders to shape requirements, clarify SLAs/non-functional needs (performance, resilience, RTO), and provide technical input during grooming and planning.
You’ll support code in production - Taking ownership of services you build—participating in on-call, incident response and root-cause analysis, then implementing fixes and long-term improvements.
You’ll proactively troubleshoot - Monitoring performance, resilience and scalability; improving observability (logging, metrics, tracing) and alerting to spot issues early and reduce customer impact.
You’ll help us improve - Strengthening engineering best practices (code reviews, security, documentation, design patterns), improving CI/CD and deployment automation, and coaching junior engineers on coding and operational practices when needed.
The skills you’ll need to succeed
You know backend engineering: Java, APIs, microservices and data
You’ve designed and delivered microservices using modern Java frameworks.
You know HTTP APIs inside out (REST and/or gRPC/GraphQL), including API contract design and versioning.
You build cloud-native services that run reliably
You’ve built and operated services on Kubernetes and understand cloud-native patterns.
You’ve worked with public cloud platforms like Azure or GCP (deployments, configuration, managed services).
You test like you mean it
You write unit and integration tests and maintain healthy automated test coverage.
You can ship software through CI/CD
You’ve contributed to CI/CD pipelines (Jenkins/GitHub, build tooling) and deployment automation
You can support production and handle incidents
You’ve done production support, including on-call, incident response and root-cause analysis.
You know observability: logging, metrics, tracing and alerting, and how to use them to troubleshoot quickly.
