delegated authority from Transport Canada, the incumbent will make findings of compliance for EMC-related certification activities, ensuring that aircraft systems are protected against electromagnetic threats including EMI, HIRF, lightning, and ESD.
Key Responsibilities
Act as a Transport Canada Delegated Authority (DAD or DAR) for EMC, making findings of compliance to applicable airworthiness regulations.
Review, approve, and sign compliance documentation, including test reports, analyses, and certification plans, within the scope of delegation.
Interpret and apply certification regulations (e.g., TCCA, FAA, EASA) related to EMC, lightning protection, and HIRF.
Lead compliance demonstration activities, including test witnessing, analysis validation, and conformity assessments.
Assess and approve qualification documentation in electromagnetics (e.g., RF susceptibility, RF emissions, lightning indirect/direct effects, electrostatic discharge, magnetic effects).
Evaluate aircraft-level inter-system electromagnetic interference and ensure compliance with certification requirements.
Provide regulatory guidance to engineering teams, ensuring designs meet certification requirements early in the development process.
Review and approve engineering changes, repairs, and non-conformances for continued airworthiness within delegated authority.
Interface directly with Transport Canada and other certification authorities on EMC-related matters, including issue resolution and certification strategy.
Support certification planning activities, including development of certification plans, means of compliance, and issue papers.
Mentor and support engineers in understanding certification requirements and compliance expectations.
Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or equivalent. Specialization in electromagnetics is a strong asset.
Minimum of 8–10 years of experience in EMC engineering within the aerospace industry.
Must hold, or be eligible to obtain, Transport Canada DAD or DAR delegation in the EMC discipline.
Demonstrated experience in certification programs and compliance showing for Part 25 (or equivalent) aircraft.
Strong understanding of aircraft systems and integration at the aircraft level.
Skills
In-depth knowledge of electromagnetic theory, EMI/EMC, signal integrity, transmission lines, antennas, and propagation.
Extensive knowledge of applicable regulations (e.g., 14 CFR / CAR 525, including fuel tank safety and electromagnetic effects requirements).
Familiarity with industry standards and guidance material (DO-160, SAE ARPs, FAA ACs, TCCA policies).
Proven ability to independently assess compliance and exercise sound engineering judgment within delegated authority.
Strong communication skills, with the ability to interface effectively with regulators, suppliers, and internal stakeholders.
Experience with electromagnetic simulation tools (e.g., EMA3D) is an asset.
High level of accountability, integrity, and attention to detail required for delegated approval authority.
